He’s super confident, full of energy, and having a lot of fun. Boulder, Colorado native Sam Long is reinvigorating the triathlon experience both on, and off-the-road.
We caught up with Sam “Yo, Yo, Yo!” Long on the eve of the XTERRA Beaver Creek off-road triathlon in July to get his pre-race thoughts and as always, his interview didn’t disappoint … nor did his performance the next day.
Long came out of the water a few seconds ahead of one of his sporting icons, Josiah Middaugh, then the two American triathlon greats went tire-to-tire all the way up the big mountain climb. Middaugh and Sam Osborne led the race into T2 by about a minute, but Long posted the fastest run of the day to stride past Middaugh into second. Osborne won it, Middaugh finished third.
“I had the fitness, but lacked the finesse on the mountain bike. I have to ride trails more, because it’s always been a personal goal of mine to win an XTERRA,” said Long after the race.
Since his XTERRA debut in Beaver Creek in 2016, Long has finished 2nd twice and 3rd twice at this event.
Next up, his hometown race – Ironman Boulder 70.3 – this Saturday, August 7, 2021.
